If John R. Guthrie contributes Stalin's atrocities to a "typical Russian" behaviour, should we then attribute American silence, complacency and naivete as the proof of "typical American behaviour"? How come that President Rooswelt, vice President Wallace, secretary of state Hopkins, Ambassador Davies, Harriman, the entire State Department and the federal beaurocracy of US admired Stalin, took his gifts, close eyes on facts aboiut great terror, sold Poland and other countries - isn't that a sin that went unpunished? And now the Amazon says that the book is not available for sale!

A fascinating review by Tim Tsouliadis. While "The Forsaken" is focused on telling the story of the brutalization of American expatriot naif's, I have the impression that much of what occurred is traditionally Russian as much as much as a purely Stalinist or Communist phenomena. Ivan the IV, ("The Terrible") for instance, beat his pregnant daughter-in-law then killed his son when his son confronted his father about it. Ivan also had secret police carried out repeated atrocities, killling so many resiudents of the town of Novgorod, for instance, that the river nearby was choked with corpses.
Peter the Great had his son Alexi killed, etcv, etc. It is my understanding that the poisonings, brutalizations and killings are of long standing and persist to the pressent day.
I'm looking forward to reading "The Forgotten."
Great review.
