My great aunt and uncle were Hattie and Elsworth Gundelfinger. There were fine folks. They lived in St. Louis after they returned from their ordeal.

Peter - thank you for another insightful, valuable, and charming reminiscence. You are truly following the calling of your family name to be a bridge for others to find and explore aspects of history only dimly or not at all known. I was age 1 - 4 while may father was in the Army, ultimately serving for a while in the Philippines but my only recollection that relates to the war experience is recording a Christmas message to him with my mother and asking him to send me "a wagon, a red wagon, dear daddy." Jim

Hi Peter. I enjoyed your article very much! My parents lived in the Philippines from 1938 until April 1941. My father was an army officer, and they lived in Fort Stotsenberg which became a part of Clark Air Force Base after the war. They took many color 8mm movies of the PI at that time, and if you are interested in seeing them sometime, I will attempt to recover them. Hope you and Mary Jane are enjoying the summer so far. I see a doctor in Denver on Thursday, and perhaps a new hip joint will result. I will be an "artifical hippie". Lash
