I was born in 1939 and my three half-brothers were heading to Europe being drafted into WWII. Only in the last 20 years have I taken an interest in learning more about their experiences. They are all gone now, but they still wouldn't have shared with me as that's just the way it was for so many who actually returned home. They were all three silent about their experiences, but I endured their moods and attempts to cope by drinking. Now I understand them because of stories like yours. Thanks so much. You are truly following the calling of your family name to be a bridge for others to find and explore aspects of history only dimly or not at all known. I was age 1 - 4 while may father was in the Army, ultimately serving for a while in the Philippines but my only recollection that relates to the war experience is recording a Christmas message to him with my mother and asking him to send me "a wagon, a red wagon, dear daddy." Jim

Peter – thank you for another insightful, valuable, and charming reminiscence. My father was an army officer, and they lived in Fort Stotsenberg which became a part of Clark Air Force Base after the war. They took many color 8mm movies of the PI at that time, and if you are interested in seeing them sometime, I will attempt to recover them. Hope you and Mary Jane are enjoying the summer so far. I see a doctor in Denver on Thursday, and perhaps a new hip joint will result. I will be an "artifical hippie". Lash

Hi Peter.
