Umm. Anybody think Woodrow Wilson supported the right to dissent?

Has his administration's repressive policies been given much attention in our schools?

Being committed to individual liberty am not a socialist. Happen to believe in the idea of cooperative -- not predatory -- capitalism.
(Nor, I think, is President Obama a socialist. But am not sure he believes in cooperative capitalism. Do believe he likes the idea of power and control.)

Am worse than a socialist -- am a populist. The aggrandizers among us (see first half of Federallist 57) use "populist" when they really mean "demagogue."

I think Lincoln summed up the populist credo at the end of his remarks at Gettysburg.

This interview with Ernest Freeberg re "Democracy’s Prisoner," provides a telling commentary on a little remembered yet fascinating episode in American history. It's easy to forget what a fragile thing free speech is, and how readily it's abrogated when the drums of war beat. I'm looking forward to reading Prof. Freeberg's book.
