I have always enjoyed reading Peter Bridges on Italy but this piece is really masterful. I loved the fairy tale aspects of it. And so much of that history is vague at best. But the comparisons with Homer and the 19th century retellings of these stories bring it to us quite vividly. The wonder is how many unknown peoples still live in Italia who, though Italians are also independent and how it shows in customs and festivals even at this late date.
