The name Gibraltar is believed to originate from Jebel Tarik, i.e. Tarik's mountain. However, the Arabic name for bird is phonetically translated to 'ta'. It would not be surprising if the Moors, upon crossing the Strait of Gibraltar, noticed large numbers of migrating raptors and storks and named the rock after them, Jebel-ta, or Bird Mountain.
