My story is reminiscent of yours. I got a masters degree in 1970 and found myself teaching high school in a small logging town in Washington state, where country music (which I had hated up until then) made perfect sense to me. I lived with the people of the Porridge Club. My friends here in the effete intellectual east where I now work at a university think my taste in music is slightly askew, but what can I say, I love Johnny Cash. And June, and that whole gospel-toting clan. I am a progressive organic-eating democrat who is proud to say that I can sing all the words to "I Walk the Line" with appropriate country twang, and I have no idea what they really mean.

I absolutely loved this. I can't see ANYONE disliking John Prine or Marty Robbins.Better not bother with the guy,he appears to be a couple of bricks short.
Try to include a bit of Hoyt Axton in your listening menue. You will find farmers will perk up,and the Porridge Club will come back for seconds.
