Ah my precious Appennines. My father grew up in Ovindoli, just between Monte Velino and Monte Sirente with the Gran Sasso guarding over her land about 50 km's away.

Your story reminds me of many peaceful hikes I've had in this sleepy region of the country. The weather can be ominous at times, but I'm Canadian, so nothing unexpected.

I hope, as do you, that this region can remain an unspoiled European oasis.

This site has various montain webcams from central Italy.

Having once owned a small house in the Abruzzi mountains for 17 years, I know and love the area so eloquently described by Peter Bridges. His fascinating account overlooks only a detail, literally: that when you descend from the mountains you may come upon a 14th century church or even a Roman temple in an entirely isolated setting--and wolf tracks in the spring snows.
