Your story reminds me of many peaceful hikes I've had in this sleepy region of the country. The weather can be ominous at times, but I'm Canadian, so nothing unexpected.
I hope, as do you, that this region can remain an unspoiled European oasis.
This site has various montain webcams from central Italy.

His fascinating account overlooks only a detail, literally: that when you descend from the mountains you may come upon a 14th century church or even a Roman temple in an entirely isolated setting--and wolf tracks in the spring snows.

Having once owned a small house in the Abruzzi mountains for 17 years, I know and love the area so eloquently described by Peter Bridges.
