i'm glad this reviewer acknowledges his intellectual limitations because that's about all his review has going for it. the lay of the land is a great work and if i hear another critic whining about ford not "returning to the tough writing of the early years" i think i'll puke. you guys need to move on. stop judging a book based on your own measly expectations and read it on its own terms. slow down and read the book for its poetry and humor.

"all you critics stand alone. you're no better for what you've shown...with your stomach pumps and your hook and ladder dreams." --neil young

Critical Praise? What review was zat from? Not the ones I saw:

"..a by the numbers sequel. Not a suitable followup to The Sportswriter or Independence Day. True there pieces of fabulous writing, but they lie between page after page of self serving psuedo wisdom." The New York Times - Mitchiko Kakutani.

"We now have over 1,200 pages of the life and times of Frank Bascomb, and after all of this, I don't believe Bascomb is a man who lost his son. I simply don't believe it." -Leonard Raab, Esquire Magazine.

I liked it. In fact, I think it's one of the best books I've ever read. Frank can be a bit boring and smug, but then so can I. The funny stuff in the book is underrated; I'm particularly thinking about the disgust Frank feels for "Thom" his daughter's "beau", the "equitation" expert.
